Mechanically Switchable Transparency and Wetting of Elastomeric Smart Windows |

We report a facile and efficient method for fabricating elastomeric smart windows with switchable optical transparency and wetting properties by combining replica molding with surface wrinkling. Reversible switching between transparent/water-pinned and opaque/superhydrophobic properties was achieved by controlling the surface topography via mechanical strain. The resulting smart windows, which featured controlled nanopillars and surface wrinkling, exhibited not only significant changes in optical transmittance and wetting properties, but also displayed additional functionalities such as self-cleaning and antireflection. This approach provides a low-expertise route to fabricating multifunctional smart windows, and the methodology may be applied in a wide range of applications requiring external stimuli-responsive surfaces. |
