Preparation and Characterization of Pitch-based Conductive Carbon Paper for Gas Diffusion Layer |

Polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFC) are considered as a promising alternative and clean energy conversion technology for a range of automotive and small stationary applications. The gas diffusion layer (GDL) is one of the main components used in PEMFC and it plays a role as a pathway for electron transport and water management in PEMFC. Also, GDL requires high conductivity to provide electron channels and reduces electrical resistance loss during the PEMFC operation. In this work, the conductive carbon materials, such as petroleum coke and graphite were used to improve the GDL properties by impregnating of pitch-based carbon paper preform. The influence of conductive carbon materials on physicochemical properties of the carbon paper was investigated through the interfacial contact resistance, electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity, and tensile strength measurements. |
