As one of the most promising candidates for advanced energy storage systems beyond lithium ion batteries, lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries have been actively studied. In particular, various active materials based on sulfur-carbon composites have been introduced to overcome the issues of Li-S batteries such as low conductivity and electrode degradation caused by polysulfide species. On the other hand, the binding properties of polymeric binders also significantly affect cell performances. In this respect, we herein introduce cross-linkable and water-soluble polymer glyoxalated polyacrylamide (GxPAAm) as an effective binder for Li-S batteries. Cross-linked GxPAAm can effectively suppress the change of electrode during electrochemical reaction of Li-S under electrolyte-wetted condition. It is also notable that high discharge capacity was obtained without using complex treatments on active materials, which is highly advantageous for mass-scale production. |
