Effect of Carbonization Temperature on the Surface Structure and Properties of Wood Charcoal |

The surface structure and properties of wood charcoal was examined by FTIR, SEM and N2 adsorption isotherm in terms of the carbonization temperatures. The carbonization temperature greatly affects the structure of charcoal. The precabonization at 400 oC caused the pyrolysis of cellulose and the hemicellulose while the wood charcoal carbonized at 600 oC further experienced the pyrolysis of most lignin. The IR spectrum of the charcoal prepared at 700 oC remained relatively unchanged compared to that carbonized at 600 oC while its specific surface area and micropore volume continuously increase with the carbonization temperature. The increase in the specific volume and the micropore volume seemed related with the presence of the mesopores in the SEM image of the carbonized wood charcoal, which were not observed in the untreated sugi. |
