Magnetic carbon nanotubes were fabricated by using polypyrrole nanotubes as the carbon precursor. First, iron-doped polypyrrole nanotubes were fabricated by chemical oxidation polymerization using a self-assembly method that is advantageous for large-scale synthesis. Then, subsequent carbonization of PPy nanotubes was used to generate magnetic carbon nanotubes. The main advantage of this synthetic strategy is that the reverse microemulsion polymerization, followed by the carbonization process, makes it possible to fabricate magnetic carbon nanotubes without using any specific template and encapsulation process. The polypyrrole nanotubes formed graphitic structures at mild carbonization temperature, and the magnetic carbon nanotubes showed ferromagnetic behavior even at 300 K. |
