Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been received much attention for use in fabricating a new class of advanced materials because of excellent physical, electrical and thermal properties. Various applications require good solubility of CNTs in solvents. To prove sulfonation, model reaction between pyrene and chlorosulfonic acid was conducted to confirm the feasibility of reaction on carbon framework. The resultant sulfonated pyrene was carefully analyzed and results showed that pyrene was successfully sulfonated. On the basis of the model reaction, the sulfonation of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) was also conducted in chlorosulfonic acid at 0 C for 6h. The resultant sulfonated MWNT (S-MWNT), which could be water soluble, was characterized by using FT-IR, XPS, SEM, TEM and etc. |
