Dendritic polymers such as dendrimers and hyperbranched polymers are three dimensional macromolecules, in which a large number of arms of similar molecular weight and narrow molecular weight distribution emanate from a central core. They are used in molecular encapsulation, light-harvesting systems, biomedical applications, and catalysis etc.. Amphiphilic copolymers composed of hydrophilic and hydrophobic parts are used in interface active agents, drug delivery systems, etc.. In this study, we synthesized star-shape amphiphilic block copolymers containing hydrophilic PEG core and hydrophobic hyperbranched PS arms. The PEG cores are obtained by anionic polymerization of ethylene oxide. The hyperbranched PS arms are synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization of chloromethyl styrene. The resulting polymers have core-shell structures and amphiphilicity. From this result, we expect unimolecular micell behavior of synthesized polymers. The synthesized polymers are characterized by GPC, 1H-, 13C-NMR, and FT-IR etc..
