Effect of PFO carbon coating on SiOx surface for cycle stability of lithium ion batteries |

Lithium ion batteries (LIBs) have been utilized in many fields such as portable electronic device, electronic vehicle, and large-scale energy storage system. SiOx is one of the most promising anode active materials for LIBs due to their high reversible specific capacity above 1000 mA h g-1. However, volume expansion and poor electrical conductivity of SiOx anode restrict their commercialization. Carbon coatings could prevent the volume expansion and enhance the electrical conductivity. In this study, we designed carbon-coated SiOx anode active material (SiOx@C) using Pyrolysis Fuel Oil (PFO). The specific capacity and cycling stability of SiOx@C was measured and compared to that of SiOx which was not coated. SiOx and SiOx@C showed similar specific capacities within 20 cycles but SiOx@C had higher value after that. Consequently, the results revealed that the prepared SiOx@C anode active material had good cycling stability for lithium ion storage. |
