Preparation of activated carbon from anthracite by KOH chemical activation for supercapacitor electrodes |

Electric double-layer capacitors(EDLCs) are very attractive as a potential energy storage system because of their superior properties; high energy density, low cost and environmentally friendly technology. In this study, anthracite-derived activated carbons(ACs) were prepared using chemical activation for EDLCs electrodes. Although anthracite has some impurity, the abundance and low market-value enable to be used for a cost-competitive carbon source. An activation process was developed by evaluating different activation reagent/anthracite ratios and treating environments such as carbonization temperature and activation temperature and time. The microstructural properties of ACs were measured N2 adsorption/desorption isotherms at 77K. From these results, the specific surface area and total pore volume of ACs were determined to be 1,150-1,970 m2/g and 0.53-1.10 cm3/g, respectively. The specific capacitance of ACs was determined by a two-electrode system with an organic electrolyte. |
