Biodegradable polymers and hydrogels have been increasingly applied in a variety of biomedical device industry as contact lenses, artificial corneas, dressings as coatings for sutures and electrode sensors. α,β-Poly(N-2-hydroxyethyl-DL-aspartamide), PHEA, is one of poly(amino acid)s with hydroxyethyl pendants, which is known to be biodegradable and potentially biocompatible. The use and various chemical modifications of PHEA have been attempted for useful biomedical applications. In this work, homo and composite hydrogel materials based on PHEA were prepared by reacting with glutaraldehyde in water in the presence of acid catalyst. The PHEA was prepared from polysuccinimde, the precursor polymer, via ring-opening reaction with ethanolamine. The preparation of gels and their swelling behavior, depending on the different medium, temperature and pH, are investigated. And also a preliminary result on the hydrolytic and enzymatic degradation are presented. These PHEA-based hydrogels have potential application as matrix material for drug delivery and tissue engineering.
