Hydrogel has cross-linked, three-dimensional network that can absorb large amount of water or hydrophilic solvents. Because of this property, hydrogels are applied to various fields such as sensors, actuators, and drug delivery systems. We have presented unique method for producing hydrogel with inorganic particles by gamma-ray irradiation and their structural characteristics. By gamma-ray irradiation, we modified the inorganic particles’ surface from hydroxyl groups to peroxide groups. This method led to decomposition of peroxide groups to oxide radicals by increasing temperature to 40ºC which initiated the polymerization. We suggested organic/inorganic hydrogel which are synthesized without any additives. In this report, we used sphere shaped silica and rod shaped imogolite particles as inorganic part of hydrogel and studied inorganic particles’ shape effects on swelling property of hydrogel. In particularly, the swelling ratio was confirmed at different pHs and solvents. |
