Single crystalline metal films are usually fabricated by epitaxial deposition or Czochralski crystal-growing which make the films expensive. Sometimes, grain growth of polycrystalline films can produce single crystal-like metal films. Grains normally grow uniformly, but in specific growth condition, a few grains have additional driving force such as surface and strain energy. Abnormal grain growth (AGG) can result huge grains compare to normal grain growth, however AGG is hard to control. Here, we demonstrate simple preparation of single crystalline metal film through one short annealing process, using commercial metal foil. Surface energy driven AGG was induced and accelerated by recrystallization of metal foil and annealing atmosphere, and 10*10 cm2 sized single crystalline Cu foil was obtained. The method was applicable to other metals. The prepared single crystalline metal can be used in high quality 2D material synthesis such as graphene or h-BN. |
