A deep understanding on the behavior of the molecules on the surfaces is necessary to gain control over performance of the heterogeneous catalysts. Moreover, by creating interfaces between inorganic and organic functionalities, we may be able to tune the properties related to the surfaces with the versatility of organic molecules. In this talk, fundamental aspects of the adsorption and desorption of organic molecules and molecular fragments on semiconductor and metal surfaces will be presented. In many cases, the strongest interaction that drives the adsorption of organic molecules on the surfaces is local bond formation between the molecules and the surface. However, weaker lateral interactions within the adsorbate-substrate system are also present, and are observed in diverse aspects depending on the system. A combination of experimental techniques in addition to theoretical methods was helpful in elucidation of the surface processes. |
