Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have brought considerable attention to a wide range of sciences since their discovery. Due to their superior mechanical, thermal, electrical, and optical properties, it is expected to substitute a variety of classical materials in near future. In this study, carbon nanotubes were incorporated onto the surface of polystyrene (PS) microspheres by a simple process. PS was prepared using a dispersion polymerization method. The hollow carbon microspheres were prepared by three steps: 1) functionalization of the CNTs with hydrophilic surface groups, 2) adsorption of the CNTs onto the PS template particles, and 3) removal of the PS template. The hollow MWNTs spheres can be applied to nanoscale sensors and electric devices as well as to optical, magnetic, and catalytic applications. |
