Biodegradable polymer blends of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and thermoplastic poly(ester urethane) elastomer (TPEU) were prepared by a melt mixing in an internal mixer. Phase morphology, and mechanical, thermal and rheological properties of the blends were investigated by means of SEM, tensile test, Izod impact test, DSC, DMA and small amplitude oscillatory shear rheometry. SEM results reveals that the blends are two-phase system where TPEU disperses uniformly in PLA matrix with a domain size of 500㎚ ~ 2㎛ scale depending on TPEU content. The addition of TPEU caused a remarkable improvement in elongation at break and Izod impact strength of PLA. It was observed that cold crystallization of PLA was enhanced by the elastomer. Linear shear rheological analysis shows that incorporation of TPEU results in a increased storage modulus(G')and complex viscosity(η*) as well as the higher shear thinning of PLA/TPEU melts. |
