Since the discovery of polydopamine at Northwestern University (H. Lee et al Science Oct 19 issue, 2007 318 426-430), polydopamine surface chemistry has been extensively used in a variety of fields. Polydopmaine is a catecholamine polymer, which is inspired by amino acid compositions of mussel adhesive proteins. Unlike other surface chemistries such as self-assembled monolayer (SAM) formation, layer-by-layer (LbL) deposition, and Langmuir-Blodgett (LB), polydopamine functionalizes virtually any material surfaces. Furthermore, chemical the reactivity and the binding property of polydopamine enable one to form multifunctional secondary ad-layer on polydopamine. In this seminar, the impact of polydopamine on surface chemistry for last four years will be reviewed, and new opportunities of polydopamine will be discussed. |
