Orientation control in block copolymer (BCP) thin films have been extensively investigated not only for their fundamental scientific interest, but also for many technological applications. In this study, we investigated orientational behavior of cylindrical microdomains in PS-b-PMMA thin films placed on top of the iron oxide nanoparticle (NP) monolayers. Monodisperse iron oxide NPs were synthesized by thermal decompotision of Fe-oleate. Hexagonally packed NP monolayers were prepared with the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) technique. The roughness originated from the interstitial sites of NP monolayers affects the orientation of BCP thin films. When the relatively large sized NPs (22 nm in diameter) were used, the perpendicular orientation of PS-b-PMMA thin films was observed due to the packing frustration of the parallel orientation. |
