5–Hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) is one of the most favorable building blocks for bio based high value chemicals including pharmaceuticals, polymers solvent, fungicides and biofuels. The 5-HMF is a valuable biomass derived compound that forms via the hydrolysis, isomerization and dehydration of carbohydrates (glucose, fructose, cellulose and sucrose). Rice straw, a cheap, abundant and agricultural waste can be converted to 5-HMF by dilute acid pretreatment. Production of 5-HMF involves the removal of hemicellulose using high temperature and time with sulfuric acid. Sodium hydroxide is then used in the removal of lignin and finally hydrolysis of cellulose into 5-HMF. This study focuses on pretreatment of lignocellulosic biomass using sulfuric acid and careful outline 5-HMF production processes with homogeneous or heterogeneous catalytic organic solvents and this produced significant yield of 5-HMF. |
