An improved method for the preparation of melt-spinning and stretching microporous polypropylene hollow fiber membrane |

Melt spinning and stretching (MS-S) is an economic, convenient, and clean method to prepare membranes. Usually semi-crystal polyolefin (PP, PE) materials are suitable to be made into membrane by this process. In this work, based on the prior work, we studied the process of PP hollow fiber membrane in order to improve the properties of membranes. A model for describing the formation of melt-spun hollow fiber based on differential equations was created and subsequently calculated with numerical method. It was found that the simulation results fit the experimental data well. According to these results, the spinning process can be optimized. An improved method was achieved with relative high gas (water) flux. Besides materials, low spinneret temperature (Tm + 20~50℃), large draw ratio (2000~4000) and direct-hot-stretching temperature (TR + 40~100℃) were considered as key factors to get high-performance PP membrane. The gas flux of the improved membrane was 9.0×10-2cm3/cm2.s.cmHg, 2.5 times higher than that of the unimproved membrane (3.4×10-2cm3/cm2.s.cmHg). The water flux of the membrane increases from 48.0L.m-2.hr-1 to 86.0L.m-2.hr-1. The microporous membrane fouling caused by tap water will be comprehensively discussed based on the filtration-cake theory. |
