Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have outstanding mechanical, electrical, and thermal properties, displaying a series of promising characteristics for a wide range of application. But, they have the disadvantages such as poor solubility and dispersibility in polymers matrix. To enhance the dispersion properties of MWNTs in polymer matrix, the surface of MWNTs have been chemically modified by either covalent or non-covalent method. Pyrene and pyridine moieties having similar chemical structures with polymers were synthesized and used to functionalize the surface of MWNTs via non-covalent method. It can be expected the π-π interaction of pyrene and pyridine with MWNTs and the better compatibility of moieties with polymer due to the chemical structures. Non-covalent functionalization of MWNTs was conducted by ultrasonication and polymer/functionalized MWNTs nanacomposite films were prepared by solvent-casting. The modified MWNTs exhibited the better dispersion in polymer matrix by TEM. |
