Ferroelectric polymeric materials such as as poly vinylidene fluoride (PVDF) are particularly of interest for non-volatile data storage. PVDF exhibits at least three crystalline forms including α, β, and γ, among which the β phase is the most important. We investigated simple and practical method to fabricating ferroelectric β type PVDF thin films on Au substrate based on spin casting combined with rapid thermal treatment. The humidity controlled spin coating followed by rapid thermal annealing at 150 °C just below the melting temperature of PVDF enables us to produce thin uniform ferroelectric PVDF film with the characteristic sphere cap β crystals over large area. Furthermore, micropatterns with α and β phase of PVDF can be fabricated on a microcontact printed chemical surface with COOH terminated SAMs. α phase dominantly formed on the regions with the COOH region while β one on the bare Au surface, leading to a well defined micropattern of the two crystal phases. |
