To improve the selectivity of Nafion membrane, reduce the crossover of vanadium ions and decrease water transfer across the membranes used in Vanadium Redox Flow Battery (VRFB) system, the solution casting method was employed to obtain a nanocomposite membrane of Nafion/Poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/Montmorillonite (MMT). Water uptake, ion exchange capacity, proton conductivity and crossover of the membrane were measured to evaluate the membrane properties. These results are comparable to those found for Nafion 117 membrane with similar thickness at the same conditions. Nafion/PVA/MMT 4 wt% nanocomposite membrane resulted in the highest ion selectivity, and the tensile strength was improved up to twice compared to Nafion/PVA membrane. |
