Recently, various types of hydrophilic-hydrophobic multiblock copolymers based on sulfonated poly(arylene ether sulfone)s have been synthesized for fuel cell applications such as Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC) and Direct Methanol Fuel Cell (DMFC). In this study, a series of sulfonated poly(arylene ether sulfone) multiblock copolymers containing a fluorenyl group were synthesized. 9,9-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)fluorene (HPF) and 4,4'-difluorodiphenyl sulfone (DFDPS) were used as comonomers for hydrophobic block, whereas 4,4'-biphenol (BP) and sulfonated 4,4'-dichlorodiphenyl sulfone (SDCDPS) were used as hydrophilic blocks. The longer hydrophilic and hydrophobic blocks resulted in higher water uptake and higher proton conductivity. AFM observation revealed that phase separation of the HPF multiblock copolymers was more pronounced than that of the HPF random copolymers. The results indicate the potential application of the synthesized polymer as proton exchange membranes. |
