Comparative Study of Hydrogenation and ring opening of tetraline on Supported Ni and Ir catalysts |

The hyogenation and selective ring opening (SRO) of tetraline catalyzed by Ni/SiO2 and Ir/SiO2 catalysts have been studied, in the context of the removal of polynuclear aromatics from diesel fuel. The catalysts were prepared by co-precipitation method and their surface was characterized by H2-TPR, XRD, NH3-TPD, BET and TEM. The Tetraline ring opening was carried out in a fixed-bed reactor and the resultant products were analyzed by GC and GC-MS analysis. Over Ir/SiO2 catalyst we obtained 85% conversion of tetraline with 75.1% decalin products selectivity whereas on Ni/SiO2 catalyst showed an unprecedented high catalytic performance with 88.3% of tetraline conversion and 93% decalin products selectivity. From an economic point of view, Ni-based catalysts offer an interesting alternative to noble metal (Ir)-based catalysts for hydrogenation and SRO process. |
