Carbon nanopowders (CNP’s) are structurally spherical carbons as carbon onions. Although carbon nanoparticles such as fullerenes have good electrochemical and photophysical properties, their commercial applications are not cost-effective. CNP’s, however, are much cheaper and are expected to have similar properties of fullerenes. We have developed a reaction medium, PPA/P2O5, which is strong enough to facilitate Friedel-Crafts acylation reaction to the sp2 C-H bonds. So, 4-(2,4,6-trimethylphenoxy)benzamide (2,4,6-TMPBA) was synthesized and reacted with CNP’s to afford functionalized CNP’s. Since the expected products should contain carbonyl groups upon functionalization, FT-IR spectroscopy is conveniently used as analytical tool to confirm the reaction of Friedel-Crafts acylation of CNP’s. The covalent attachment of 2,4,6-TMPBA moiety onto the CNP’s was further assured by using SEM, UV-absorption spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, and PSA. |
