Preparation and characterization of latex films containing perfluorinated polyethers |

We will describe in this presentation some unique properties of acrylic latex films containing perfluorinated polyethers (PFPE), which are an important class of fluoropolymers due to their outstanding thermal stability, chemical inertness and low surface free energy. PFPE oligomers were synthesized by anionic polymerization of hexafluoropropylene oxide (HFPO) at room temperature and several types of monomers with PFPE pendent group were prepared. Among others, the PFPE oligomer mainly composed of HFPO-tetramer (Mn~700) was used in this study. Conventional anionic surfactant and initiator were used in emulsion polymerization of the prepared monomers and, if necessary, other fluorinated monomers. The latex films were obtained by simply casting the resulting latex particles on glass slides and annealing at high temperature, and then, characterized by using various instruments such as NMR, DSC, and XPS. |
