Functionalization of 3,4-Diaminobenzoic Acid onto the Surface of Carbon Nanotube in Polyphosphoric acid/Phosphorous Pentoxide Medium |

The reaction medium, polyphosphoric acid (PPA)/phosphourus pentoxide (P2O5) was strong enough to facilitate functionalization onto carbon nanomaterials. The key component on the reaction medium was a mild PPA. Its acidic nature was to protonate carbon nanomaterials, but it was benign enough to be less-destructive. The reaction medium was used to modify carbon nanotube as a model compound to trace redaction mechanism from the analysis of functionalized adducts. 3,4-Diaminobenzoic acid was functionalized in the presence of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) or multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) via Friedel-Crafts acylation in polyphophoric acid (PPA)/phosphorous pentoxide (P2O5). After confirmation of the functionalization, 3,4-diaminobenzoyl-functionalized MWNTs will be used for the grafting of polybenzimidazole (PBI). Thus, the resultant functionalized MWNTs were characterized with EA, FT-IR, TGA, and SEM. |
