Membranes are of interest for a wide range of phyico-chemical applications due to their ability to separate chemical species. Their peculiar separation characteristics allow one component (i.e., water or specific ions) of a mixture to permeate the membrane freely, while hindering permeation of other components (i.e., specific ions or molecular complexes). Membrane technologies are energy-efficient, cost-efficient, and environmentally friendly, and can also be applied to directly generate energy from a variety of sources, such as saline and waste water, hydrogen, methane, and alcohols. The optimization of membrane materials/types and their assemblies, and the setup of operation conditions can lead to improved transport of small molecules and/or ions and high energy conversion efficiency. Directly Copolymerized poly(arylene ether sulfone) random or multiblock copolymers are being investigated as promising materials for green energy generation and continuous production of valued chemicals such as water, hydrogen and chlorine. |
