The forward osmosis (FO) process has an advantage in energy consumption compared to the reverse osmosis (RO). Biofouling, caused by microorganisms in the feed water, is inevitable in the forward osmosis (FO), requiring the disinfection and cleaning process. Chlorine is effective disinfectant and oxidant cleaning agent to control biofouling. However, since chlorine deteriorates the polyamide (PA) which has been used as active layer of the FO membrane, it is reluctant to be applied to biofouling control in the FO system. We propose anti-chlorination PA-FO membrane with polydopamine (PDOPA) coating. The performance of PDOPA coated PA-FO membrane expressed as water permeate flux and solute reverse diffusion was tested in lab-scale FO system. As a result, the PDOPA coated membrane, treated by chlorine, maintained the solute reverse diffusion rate with better water flux, compared to the pristine. The PDOPA coating layer was considered to pre-absorb the chlorine instead of PA on FO membrane, considering XPS analysis. |
