Poly(dimethyl siloxane), PDMS, is a special polymer with a long history, and its unique range of broad applications resides in the molecular structure of silicon-oxygen backbone with two methyl groups pendant to Si atom. Since the pendant groups are hydrophobic while siloxane oxygen is hydrophilic, whole chain molecule is amphiphilic, rendering it surface active toward the air/water interface (A/W). In addition, it is a polymer with the lowest glass transition temperature among common polymers by virtue of its extreme chain flexibility, in part attributable to a large bond angle of Si-O. The story of PDMS pivots on its surface activity, coupled with the chain flexibility. |
