Compared to four important materials in LIB, very little attention has been given to binder materials. The binder is a polymeric material to adhere active materials with the current collector as well as to cohere between active materials. In recent years, much research on developing high capacity anode materials such as Si, Sn and their oxides has been actively performed. However, the materials experience significantly large volumetric change by insertion/deinsertion of lithium ions during charge/discharge processes. This leads to extremely high internal stress and fracture in electrodes and thus high capacity loss. These problems could be resolved using a polymeric binder with high adhesion strength and moderate elongation. In this talk, we discuss in detail about the conditions for the binder of high-capacity electrodes and briefly introduce our research on a binder candidate by several characterization techniques: coin half cell test, impedance, adhesion test, TGA, DSC, etc. |
