Heteroatoms (N, F, S) doped graphitic carbon shell on Pt as efficient and durable oxygen reduction electrocatalyst for fuel cell application |

Oxygen reduction reaction is an important factor in limiting the performance of proton exchange membrane fuel cells. Pt based electrocatalyst registered the bench mark in their performance. The limitation of Pt based electrocatalyst is defined as the cost and the destabilization during their continuous operation (Ostwald repining). To rectify this issue, Pt covered by hetero atoms doped carbon shell are designed and studied as ORR electrocatalyst. As designed electrocatalysts were synthesized by two step process i.e., Pt was covered with low graphitized carbon at 500 oC from their precursors and hetero atom precursors were adsorbed on the surface. Then it was pyrolyzed at 900 oC. XRD, TGA, FE-SEM and FE-TEM with mapping analysis explains the structural properties of Pt crystals. The electrocatalytic activities of the synthesized Pt electrocatalyst were studied with CV and LSV techniques under acidic condition. Durability tests of ADT and AST helps to study the contribution of carbon shell and hetero atoms in enhancing their durability. This study deals the enhancement in performance and durability identified due to the effect of hetero atom doped carbon shell on Pt. |
