The quinoline-insoluble (QI) of pitch has known to be important to prepare pitch-coke and graphite electrodes. In this study, the petroleum pitch was modified to increase QI content by adding carbon black. The petroleum pitch was prepared by reforming pyrolysis fuel oil with different amount of carbon black at 340 oC for 4 h. The softening point and QI of the prepared pitch were measured using softening point apparatus (mettler FP90) and ASTM D4746 method, respectively. The matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization spectroscopy was used to confirm the molecular weight distribution of prepared pitches. The softening point and molecular weight distribution (exept QI content) of carbon black added reforming pitches were decreased compared to those of pristine pitch. The QI of the pristine- and optimized pitch were 0.48 and 16.9%, respectively. Since reforming by adding carbon black has high QI and low SP compared to pristine pitch, it might be suitable for manufacturing binder pitches. |
