Poly(lactic acid) (PLA), one of the most popular derivative of poly(glycolic acid) (PGA), has been used for biomedical application over the last 30 years from its biocompatible and biodegradable characteristics. PLA, however, has been used dominantly as a polymer itself or copolymer such as poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) because there is a limit to the functionalization of the polymer backbone with pendant functional group of methyl group, which is chemically unaffordable for its further modification. Here we prepared poly(glycolic acid) derivatives with introduced pendant functional group of amine and carboxylic acid from lysine and glutamic acid via ring opening polymerization (ROP) of O-carboxyanhydride (OCA). These materials allow the convenient modification of pendant group along the polymer so it is expected to apply as a multifunctional PLA derivative in variety of biomedical fields. |
