Synthesis and Characterization of Well-Defined Amphiphilic Rod-Coil Type Block Copolymers |

Self-assembly of block copolymers and their phase-separated nanostructures have been a subject of intensive research for a variety of applications. The introduction of photo-switching units such as an azobenzene group into block copolymers may provide a basis for the construction of various photoresponsive supramolecular systems. It is well-known that azobenzene groups undergo reversible photoisomerization from trans- to cis- by irradiation of UV lights and from cis- to trans- by irradiation of visible lights or heat treatments. We have synthesized well-defined rod constitutions, poly(arylene ether azobenzene)s containing an azobenzene group in the main chains, through chain-growth condensation polymerization, followed by coupling with hydroxy-terminated PEO to give rise to the well-defined amphiphilic block copolymers. Synthetic methods and characterization of the well-defined amphiphilic block copolymers will be presented. |
