For the fabrication of well-defined hierarchical superstructures on the different length scales via the self-assembly processes, we synthesize the dual photo-functionalized amphiphile containing both azobenzene for photochemical isomerization and diacetylene for topochemical polymerization. It forms smectic A (SmA) LC phase at higher temperature and highly ordered crystalline phase at lower temperature. Light-induced phase transformations of amphiphile molecules in SmA and KM phases provided us a lot of opportunities for the fabrication of remote-controllable optical devices. The light-modulating device was fabricated by applying the photo-reversible trans-cis isomerization of azobenzene group in the SmA phase, while the thermo-reversible color switching was demonstrated via the photo-polymerization of diacetylene groups in the highly ordered crystalline phase.
