Ionic liquids (ILs) have been applied as catalysts and/or promoters in many catalytic reactions such as hydrogenation, carbonylation, and carboxylation because the physical and chemical properties of catalysts can be tuned by the presence of an ionic liquid. Ionic liquids have also found uses as media in different areas of separation, such as extraction of S- and N-compounds from fuel oils, aromatics from hydrocarbons, olefins from paraffins, acetylenes from olefins, etc. In this presentation, applications of metal or selenium-containing ionic liquids catalysis and separation will be briefly discussed including Zn-containing ILs for the carboxylation of epoxides to cyclic carbonates, Se-containing ILs for the carbonylation of amines to ureas/carbamates, Zn-containing ILs for the denitrogenation from fuel oils, and Cu-containing ILs for the sepataion of acetylenes from olefins. |
