Fabrication of SiO2-TiO2 photocatalytic and self-cleaning coatings on concrete substrates |

Photocatalytic SiO2-TiO2 thin films were prepared by sol-gel method and brush coated on 6.25 cm2 concrete substrates. The coated concrete substrates were dried at 150°C for 24 h in an electric oven. The adherence of thin films was evaluated by Scotch Tape peel test. The thin film coatings were further characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), UV-vis spectrometer and water contact angle measurements. The photocatalytic properties were determined by degradation of methylene blue and toluene gas with coated concrete substrates under 254 nm light. The SiO2-TiO2 double layer coated thin films exhibited higher photocatalytic activity of both MB and toluene gas degradation. |
