All-solid-state lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have garnered considerable attention as a promising approach to simultaneously resolve safety concerns as well as challenges associated with the limited energy density of current state-of-the-art LIBs. Here, we present a new class of solid-state, plastic crystal electrolytes as an unprecedented material strategy to address the longstanding issues of conventional inorganic electrolyte-based all-solid-state LIBs. Driven by the synergistic coupling of the plastic crystal electrolytes with the printing-based fabrication of electrodes and ion-conducting membranes, the resulting all-solid-state batteries show exceptional performance in abuse tolerance (nonflammability), electrochemical performance, mechanical flexibility and form factors and that far exceed those achievable with conventional inorganic-electrolyte-based cell technologies. |
