Release Kinetics of Different Concentrations of β-Glucan in Chitosan Microspheres |

Chitosan (CHN) has been widely used as a number of biomedical uses including hemostatic bandage, antibacterial agent, and drug carrier. CHN molecules carry highly positive charges unlike other biomolecules, which enables CHN to readily binding to medicinal biomolecules. In this study, we prepared CHN microspheres loaded with different concentrations of beta-glucan and examined the surface charge of CHN microspheres at various solution pH and drug release rate. Results demonstrated that beta-glucan release rate can be controlled via varying preparation conditions. The effects of drug release on osteoblast growth and differentiation were also evaluated by cell assays and monitored the effect of drug release on solution pH to determine whether the microspheres are suitable for physiological environment.This research was supported by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE), KOREA, through the Education Program for Creative and Industrial Convergence.
