Antifouling paints are used to protect ship and boat hulls from fouling settlement and to improve craft speed by reducing water friction. The imminent ban of environmentally harmful tributyltin (TBT)-based paint products has been the cause of a major change in the antifouling paint industry. It was found that zinc (metha)acrylates have leached out into sea water and it is considered due to the ion exchange reaction between zinc in the polymers and sodium in the sea water. As the ion exchange reaction proceeds, the polymers become soluble and leach out by flow of sea water. Then these polymers are considered to be suitable for antifouling paints. In order to develop environmentally safe antifouling paints, we synthesized zinc-containing copolymers using zinc (metha)acrylate, methyl methacrylate(MMA), ethyl acrylate(EA) and 2-Methoxyethyl acrylate(2-MTA). We changed the ratio of monomer composition to compare self polishing properties and physical properties of zinc containing copolymer. |
