Air pollution is a major problem in today’s modern society. Specifically, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are one of the main air pollutants in the environment. In the present work, an attempt is made to remove VOCs in the environment by coating TiO2 on concrete samples using a simple spray coating. The anatase phase of TiO2 coated samples was confirmed by XRD analysis. The optical absorbance of the coated sample was investigated using UV-vis DRS, and the morphology was investigated using FE-SEM analysis. In addition, the elemental composition was determined by EDS, and chemical bond formation between SiO2 and TiO2 as well presence various function moieties confirmed by FTIR analysis. Photocatalytic activity was examined by degradation of toluene gas and Methylene blue dye solution under UV light. Photodegradation results confirm that the first layer of SiO2 coated on the concrete sample enhanced the photocatalytic efficiency of TiO2. Stability of sample confirmed through recyclability test. Overall, the experimental results suggest that TiO2-SiO2 coated concrete samples are an efficient photocatalytic surface for removal of VOCs in the environment. |
