Synthesis and Characterization of Amphiphilic Chitosan Modified Particles for Tissue Engineering |

Amphiphilic chitosan was developed by conjugating octyl groups as hydrophobic moieties and phenyl propionic acid as hydrophilic groups onto the amino groups at chitosan’s C-2 position. A certain amount of –NH2 was retained in the structure of the chitosan derivative through protection by phthalic anhydride. The chemical structures and degree of N- and O- substitution of the chitosan derivatives were characterized by FTIR and elemental analysis. In vitro studies demonstrated good biocompatibility and surface properties tuned for cell. The amphiphilic property for convenient self-assembly and the preserved –NH2 groups make the resultant chitosan soluble in water and potentially applicable in preparing stable chitosan particles, a demanding cell and drug-carrier in medical and pharmaceutical sciences. |
