Antibiotic-Loaded Alginate/Hyaluronic Acid Hydrogel for the Treatment of Acute Osteomyelitis |

Osteomyelitis can result from trauma, nosocomial infection, or orthopedic operation. Although the understanding of infectious diseases and the development of surgical/pharmaceutical therapeutic techniques are rapidly growing, osteomyelitis continues to be a challenge for orthopedic surgeons. Local delivery of antibiotics offers several advantages, including fewer side effects and higher local concentration of a given medicine compared to the systemic one. Compared to the other biode-gradable polymers, in situ alginate/hyaluronic acid hydrogel possesses several additional advantages, including easy preparation and free of harmful organic solvents in the formulation process. In this study, we prepared an injectable antibiotic (vancomycin)-loaded alginate/hyaluronic acid hydrogel for osteomyelitis treatment. The in vitro antibiotic release, cytotoxicity, and antibacterial activity of the antibiotic-loaded hydrogel were investigated. |
