In an autotrophic microalgae culture system using industrial flue gas, a decrease of pH in the media due to the continuous supply of CO2 inhibits cell growth. Although expensive buffering agents can be added in the media to control the pH, the overall cost of the culture process will be increased. Herein, we used a combined bicarbonate and phosphate buffer system to develop an economic buffering agent for large-scale use. Various concentrations of CO2 gas mixtures, were tested, and the developed buffer showed buffer capacity up to 10% CO2 condition. Finally, flue gas was introduced to produce the microalgae biomass, and the developed buffer system worked well, with biomass and astaxanthin productivity of 105% and 103%, compared to previous buffer system (HEPES). The results show that the proposed buffer system can reduce the cost of microalgae-based CO2 mitigation system, particularly for the outdoor mass cultivation. |
