Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) is a semi-crystalline biocompatible plastic with modulus and strength on par with human bone. The goal of this study is to apply PEEK as a material for spinal fusion, using several ways to improve its properties. First, hydroxyapatite (HA), a bioactive material that can bind directly to human bones, has been added as a filler to overcome chemical and biological inertness of PEEK. However, when HA is added to a composite over a certain amount, it agglomerates therein, reducing the strength of the composite. Therefore, improving the mechanical strength of the composite is necessary, and it has been drawn out by adding graphene oxide (GO) and carbon fiber (CF). Finally, GO and HA, have been modified to enhance the interfacial strength between matrix and fillers. This is to prevent aggregation of nano-sized particles in the polymer matrix. The effects of modified nano-sized fillers and carbon fibers on composite strength and bioactivity were measured. |
