Functionalization of biomaterials improves tissue-engineering strategies with stem cells by enhancing proliferation, differentiation, and survival of stem cells. In contrast to conventional methods with chemical synthesis, natural compound-based approaches can provide highly biocompatible, effective functionalization of polymeric scaffolds and substrates for potentiating stem cell therapy and tissue engineering. Here, we report application of several natural compounds such as catechol, polyphenol, and vitamin for functionalization of various polymeric platforms including culture substrates, hydrogels, and implantable scaffolds. |
