Applications of functionalized liquid crystal double-emulsion hollow droplets prepared by microfluidics |

Uniform-sized liquid crystal double-emulsion (LCDE) droplets were prepared by a microfluidic method. Nematic LCDE droplets in aqueous solution showed unique defect structures which were dependent on the surface anchoring conditions controlled by coated materials such as SDS and PVA. The defect structure of nematic LCDE with parallel anchoring on the outside surface produced several defects with the total defect strength of 2 although its perpendicular anchoring got rid of their defects. The LCDE droplets decorated with PAA-b-LCP showed the reversible structural change between parallel (defect structure) and perpendicular (non-defect) anchoring with respect to pH in aqueous solution. Several enzymes (such as glucose oxidase, cholesterol oxidase, and urease) were immobilized to PAA on the LCDE droplets. The enzyme-immobilized LCDE droplets were successfully demonstrated for biosensors with different colors inside the LCDE droplets for bar-code applications. |
