Pu(III) hydrolysis in NaClO4 solutions at elevated temperatures |

Thermodynamic data of actinides reactions are of global interest for the safety assessment of the high-level radioactive wastes repository. To obtain the thermodynamic data of hydrolysis of trivalent plutonium, the formation of Pu(III)-OH species was investigated at various temperatures. The pH of a plutonium solution was controlled by the hydrogen evolution reaction. The concentration of free Pu3+ ions decreased due to hydrolysis was determined by UV/Vis absorption spectroscopy. LIBD (Laser Induced Breakdown Detection) was applied for monitoring the formation of plutonium colloids. With the formation constants of Pu(III)-OH species determined at various temperatures, entropy and enthalpy of Pu(III) hydrolysis were evaluated by the van’t Hoff equation. |
