Phenolic resins as a matrix precursor for carbon/carbon composites were widely applied, however it was not an ideal matrix precursor due to lower carbon yield or oxidative resistance. Hence the blends of phenolic resins and binder pitches were applied as a matrix precursor for carbon/carbon composites. In this study, the coal-tar and petroleum based mesophase pitches as binders and phenolic resins blends were investigated to densify the carbon derived from mesophase pitches. And the resultant blends were characterized by basic analytical procedures (elemental analysis, softening point, carbon yield, solubility), thermal analysis, and optical microscopy. |
